Over the years, Uganda has made significant progress in reducing and eradicating malnutrition, particularly among vulnerable populations, through various programs, guidelines, and policies. However, despite these efforts, the country still lacks dedicated legislation on food and nutrition. A legal framework is essential to enforce existing guidelines and ensure sustained commitment to addressing malnutrition.
On September 24, 2024, the Parliament of Uganda granted Hon. Milton Muwuma permission to introduce a Private Member’s Bill titled The Food and Nutrition Bill. To ensure a well-informed and comprehensive first reading, consultations with stakeholders have been ongoing to gather technical input.
As part of this process The Nutrition Society of Uganda (NSU) with support from Right2Grow_Uganda, organized a two-day consultative meeting bringing together partners and other key stakeholders. The discussions culminated in the drafting of a position paper, consolidating expert contributions to strengthen the proposed bill.
