From March 10th to 12th, 2025, the The Nutrition Society of Uganda (NSU) joined key stakeholders in Entebbe for the validation of the Regulatory Impact Assessment (RIA) of the Food and Nutrition Policy. The meeting was convened by the Ministry of Agriculture, Animal Industry, and Fisheries (MAAIF) at Imperial Golf View Hotel.
The current Food and Nutrition Policy, established in 2003, is undergoing review after more than two decades. Although Uganda has over 40 policy frameworks addressing food and nutrition issues, the review is critical to enhancing coherence and effectiveness in addressing emerging challenges.
This review comes at a crucial time, considering the shifting nutrition trends, changes in government planning from poverty eradication to development-focused strategies, and the need to align with global and national frameworks such as the Comprehensive Africa Agriculture Development Programme
(CAADP) and the National Development Plan IV.
The 2003 policy therefore no longer adequately addresses Uganda’s evolving nutrition landscape, highlighting the urgency for updated and responsive interventions.
The meeting provided an opportunity to update stakeholders on the review progress, gather diverse perspectives, and validate key recommendations to ensure an inclusive and effective policy.
